Unfinished business from last week

Alright, last week’s serving of breakfast may be sitting uncomfortably. More questions than definitive answers have arisen from stodgy heap we broadcast from, so let’s rectify this.

On Tuesday, David Cohen and I were perplexed by the pervasive use “husting”. How is it that every 3 years one word is so trusted to portray every fresh and fierce electoral cliche? To avoid further confusion, here’s what those Oxford word nerds have to say:

<

4. The temporary platform from which, previous to the Ballot Act of 1872, the nomination of candidates for Parliament was made, and on which these stood while addressing the electors. Hence, contextually, the proceedings at a parliamentary election.

The Oxford Dictionary of English (revised edition)

>

This contextual leap seems suggests that the entire land mass of Aotearoa NZ is the present day platform for politicking. Last week in particular has seen former gameshow host, National MP Lockwood Smith raising the Blenheim hustings to precarious heights. There is no doubt that this blog is made better by my digital dexterity derived from Asian ancestry. Thanks Mum and Dad!

On Thursday, Dr.Z, our tech correspondent mentioned the world’s highest Lego tower in Vienna, Austria. Celebrating 100 years of Friends of Children, the 29.48m structure was built with the ubiquitous 4×2 rectangular lego brick.

All-you-can-eat Friday guest Marianne Elliot, Policy Advisor for Oxfam NZ, discussed their political party survey. It’s pretty interesting reading if international aid and development, climate change and global poverty are on your voting agenda. There is also some handy advice on what action you can take.

The VBC Breakfast show will be observing Labour Day. So should you! See you on Tuesday, when I’ll be talking to National’s Rongotai candidate Chris Finlayson and David Cohen.

Hell is wheeling towards you

So, you might have heard about the Richter City Roller Derby. I talked to their President, Ruth “Dishing out tha” Payne about the all-girl roller derby doco “Hell on Wheels”. It’s screening at The Film Archive, 7pm tomorrow. This is, of course, not to be confused with the doco about a bunch of wussy, lycra-clad, drug-addled pedalheads. I know which one I’d rather be doing. See you at the roller rink soon!

Oh, and here’s the boys on their pushbikes -

Filmmaker? Want Cash?

If so, The VBC has a solution and thought we should let you know about the recently announced FilmTiki competition. Read on:

FILMTIKI’S ‘HOW TO’ COMPETITION

MAKE US A FILM AND WIN $1500. SIMPLE AS THAT.

Actually, there is a bit more to it, but essentially FilmTiki is on a search for a ‘How to’ guide for their new site and what better way to show it, than through the power of film.

Therefore, with this in mind, we have decided to invite all filmmakers to come up with a 90-120 second clip on ‘How to FilmTiki’.

Not only does the winner receive $1500, but will also feature on the front page of our website and have their work screened during our tour of major film festivals throughout 2009.

Essentially the film will simply explain not only how to use FilmTiki’s Wiki and Tool, but the benefits and possibilities that it offers to filmmakers. Submissions are welcome from anywhere in the world, though entrants must be over the age of 18-years-old.

For more information and entry form click here.

About FilmTiki

FilmTiki.com is a website that aims to make filmmakers’ lives a whole lot simpler by creating a wiki and platform that will provide specifically tailored solutions on how to best promote and distribute films. Indeed, it is as easy as booking a flight: just tell us what you have and want, and we’ll tell you how to get there.

Currently we are in our development stage, as we gear up for our launch in January 2009, you find more info and sign up to the site here.

Giveaways

While the ‘Woolshed Sessions’ on at BATS this week may have sold out, you can still get a chance to have a  listen.

Indeed listen in during the Breakfast show tomorrow, where Yadana will be chatting with Brett from the band at 8am and you will hear not only about the show, but how you can win a copy of “The WoolShed Sessions” CD for yourself.

Till then….

Yeasayer on Breakfast

Ahead of their show tonight at the San Francisco Bathhouse, Yadana had a chat with Ira Wolf Tuton from Yeasayer about their new album 'All Hour

Cymbals', Sarah Palin and bathing suits.

Have a listen here: INTERVIEW ON BREAKFAST!

Tickets are still available for the show tonight (with Thought Creature), they are only $30 from Slow Boat Records and Under the

Radar.

Coming up next week

Well another week has past, but just thought you should know what we have installed for you folks on Breakfast next week.

On Monday, the host with most will mostly not be there (in fact, will not be at all), so you have to put up with Davis. That said, there shall be some good chinwags about the University fee protest going on, while at 8am the Oxfam crew are popping by to talk about their Fair Trade campaign. Of course our regular features shall return, including ‘Sport!!!!’ with Henry and a wrap up of the week in Parliament.

Tuesday, not only does Yadana return, but her predecessor, Murdoch (AKA Murd-ROCK) Stephens is back on air after 9.30am with his new fortnightly spot covering all the major issues going on down in the deep south. Plus Andrew ‘Cambo’ Campbell will come by for some politicking.

On Wednesday, we have an interview with the people from The 42 Collective about their upcoming talks on veges and food, while Rachel More is our Master of the University for this week discussing her Masters of Theatre Arts in directing.

Speaking of theatre, a couple of performers from Downstage’s upcoming production ‘Adagio’ will be in the studio to give a preview of the show at 9.15am on Thursday. Before that we will have wrap-ups from the ‘Trash Mag Hag’ and ‘Techman Zan’.

Closing the week on Friday will be an interview with the team from ‘Cabaret’, a new Toi Whakaari production opening that weekend, and no doubt a decent splash of spirits with the Bar Squire after 9.30am.

Do enjoy.

Oh, before we go, have you ever wondered where Sarah Palin gets her news from -
